THE VOICE OF THE FATHER

Prophet Dr Abiodun Adesida

We have obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab our father in all that he charged us…”
— Jeremiah 35:8 (KJV)

Today’s message

Read and reflect

Jonadab, the son of Rechab, did not leave his children a palace, fleet of chariots or fat bank account. His greatest legacy was his voice—a voice of instruction, conviction and spiritual direction.

Many years after his death, his descendants still obeyed him. His body had entered the grave, but his voice refused to die. What began as a father’s instruction eventually attracted a divine promise:

> “Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not want a man to stand before me for ever.”
— Jeremiah 35:19

This is the power of genuine spiritual fatherhood: a father’s voice can become a generational covenant.

1. The Voice of the Father: Necessary for Sustainable Covenant Partnership

Covenant cannot be sustained by excitement alone; it requires instruction, discipline and continuity.

The Rechabites remained faithful because Jonadab had clearly defined their identity. They knew what their family represented and the boundaries they must never cross.

Some people desire covenant blessings but dislike covenant instructions. They want Abraham’s blessing without Abraham’s obedience. They shout, “I receive!” but disappear when God says, “Walk before Me and be perfect.”

Covenant is not a spiritual giveaway where everybody collects promises and goes home. It is a partnership that demands faithfulness.

A genuine father’s voice teaches you how to remain committed when excitement has disappeared. It reminds you that faith is not only about beginning well but also about continuing faithfully.

2. The Voice of the Father: Strength Against External Pressure

Jeremiah placed wine before the Rechabites and invited them to drink. The offer came from a recognised prophet, inside the temple, yet they refused:

> “We will drink no wine: for Jonadab the son of Rechab our father commanded us.”
— Jeremiah 35:6

The prophet was respected, the environment was religious and the wine was probably well arranged—but conviction said, “No!”

Today, some Christians would have immediately developed a convenient revelation:

“Perhaps God is doing a new thing!”

“Maybe this is prophetic wine!”

“After all, it is happening inside the church!”

Temptation does not become holy simply because it wears a suit, carries a Bible or speaks in tongues.

The voice of a father gives strength against social, religious and cultural pressure. When everyone is saying, “Everybody is doing it,” that voice reminds you, “But this is not who you are.”

If your conviction changes whenever your company changes, you do not yet have conviction—you have spiritual camouflage!

3. The Voice of the Father: The Need for Mentorship and Followership

The Rechabites were not spiritual orphans. They could identify the voice that shaped their convictions: “Jonadab our father commanded us.”

Every believer ultimately belongs to God and must be led by the Holy Spirit. Nevertheless, God often develops us through mature leaders, mentors and spiritual fathers who provide correction, counsel and godly examples.

Do not become an orphan in Christianity.

A spiritual orphan may have many online preachers but no accountable relationship. He has one father for prophecy, another for prosperity, another for deliverance and a fourth one whose sermons he watches secretly when the first three disappoint him!

Following everybody often means being formed by nobody.

Paul told the Corinthians:

> “For though ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers.”
— 1 Corinthians 4:15

Mentorship requires humility, while followership requires discernment. A genuine spiritual father will not replace God, control your life or demand blind loyalty. He points you to Christ, corrects you in love and helps you mature.

You do not need a celebrity who knows your profile picture; you need a godly voice that knows your character and can tell you the truth when you are wrong.

4. The Voice of the Father Is a Blessing

A father’s blessing is more than emotional words spoken during a family gathering. It is a declaration of identity, purpose and destiny.

Isaac blessed Jacob, Jacob blessed his sons, and Moses blessed the tribes of Israel. In the same way, Jonadab’s instruction prepared his descendants for God’s generational promise.

The father’s blessing does not promote laziness. You cannot receive “You shall be great” and then spend the whole day sleeping as though greatness is coming by home delivery!

The blessing provides spiritual affirmation, direction and empowerment, but it must be honoured through obedience.

Never despise the sincere prayers, counsel and blessings of godly parents and spiritual mentors. Their words may become strength for a battle they will never personally witness.

Reflection

Food for Thought

A true father does not merely give you something to inherit; he places a voice within you that helps you preserve the inheritance.

Choose your spiritual influences carefully, honour godly instruction and remain faithful under pressure. The voice you obey today may become the covenant that preserves your generations tomorrow.

Prayer

Prophetic Declarations

I will not be spiritually fatherless or directionless.

I receive grace to recognise, honour and follow every godly voice assigned to my destiny.

Under pressure, I will not abandon my convictions.

Every righteous covenant over my family shall continue through my generation.

The blessings of godly fathers will speak over my life and descendants, in Jesus’ name.

Prayer

Father, give me the humility to receive godly instruction and the discernment to recognise the voices You have assigned to my journey. Strengthen me against every pressure to compromise. Help me to walk faithfully in covenant, honour righteous mentorship and preserve godly values for generations yet unborn. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
