MOMENT OF ENCOUNTER DEVOTIONAL
By Prophet Dr. Abiodun Adesida
Some families pass down property; others pass down painful patterns. Anger, dishonesty, sexual immorality, and unforgiveness can survive one generation and find accommodation in another.
“Through blood” here means across generations—not that sin lives inside the bloodstream. Scripture reveals that family wrongdoing can leave consequences, but it also teaches that a person can reject the sins of those before him (Ezekiel 18:14–20).
GEHAZI: GREED THAT BURDENED A FAMILY
2 Kings 5:20–27
Gehazi pursued Naaman’s gifts, lied to obtain them, and lied again to conceal his actions. Elisha pronounced a judgment of leprosy upon him and his descendants.
He collected the valuables; his family inherited the consequences.
Christian parent, do not say, “I am doing it for my children,” while enriching yourself through fraud. Your children need an honest inheritance more than an impressive account balance.
Gehazi’s judgment was specifically declared; it does not mean every family illness is an ancestral curse.
DAVID: PRIVATE SIN, HOUSEHOLD SORROW
2 Samuel 12:9–14; 13:1–29
David’s adultery and arrangement of Uriah’s death brought a declared judgment upon his household. Later, Amnon violated Tamar, and Absalom murdered Amnon.
David received forgiveness, but painful consequences remained. His sons were also responsible for their own sins.
Repentance must go beyond tears at the altar to changes in the home. Stop the adultery. Stop the violence. Stop the deception. Seek forgiveness and help repair the damage.
ABRAHAM AND ISAAC: THE SAME FEAR, THE SAME DECEPTION
Genesis 20:1–13; 26:6–11
Abraham concealed his marriage to Sarah; later, Isaac concealed his marriage to Rebekah. Both acted from fear and exposed their wives to danger.
Scripture shows repeated behaviour, not an irresistible bloodline curse.
Some believers pray against family patterns at midnight and practise them by morning. Do not rebuke dishonesty in prayer while defending it in business!
DELIVERANCE MUST PRODUCE A DIFFERENT LIFE
Jesus sets people free (John 8:36). Therefore, bring every bondage, destructive habit, and family wound before Him with faith.
But prayer for deliverance must accompany repentance and obedience. Refuse occult involvement, abandon secret sin, forgive others, and establish wise boundaries against abuse.
Hezekiah’s father, Ahaz, practised wickedness, yet Hezekiah trusted and followed the Lord (2 Kings 16:2–4; 18:1–6).
Your family history does not have the final word. By God’s grace, you can choose another path.
Pray earnestly—not because your surname condemns you, but because Christ is able to rescue, renew, and strengthen you.

Reflection
FOOD FOR THOUGHT:
Do not pass to your children what you are asking God to deliver you from.
Do not pass to your children what you are asking God to deliver you from.
Prayer
PRAY WITH FAITH
1. Father, forgive my sins and expose every destructive pattern I have accepted as normal.
2. In Jesus’ name, deliver me from every bondage and influence drawing me away from You.
3. Holy Spirit, break the hold of anger, lust, greed, deception, and unforgiveness in my life.
4. Lord, heal our family wounds and give us courage to make things right.
5. Let my children inherit faith, integrity, and peace through the life I live. Amen.
